Personally I believe children all learn their own way with any type of situation. However there are always good key factors to the things they pick up in life.

For example: When I was growing up, my Grandmother who raised me made me come home right after school and do all my home work.

At the time I was pretty bummed. All the other kids were allowed to play or go to the movies after school and I was not. My Grandma always wanted the best for me. She still does, bless her heart. She taught my that everything in life has hard work to get to the good times.

At 12, I didn't understand that. Now in my 20's I fully understand. More so now that I am a mother myself. The years went by and it became a habit to come home and get all my work done as soon as possible.

Why? not only because I was use to it, but because I learned over the years that the sooner I was finished, the sooner I was able to have my free time.

While all the other kids were rushing at the last minute with book reports or having bad grades, I wasn't. I was able to relax, had great grades and my Grandma rewarded my good grades by taking me shopping, or family vacations that we both loved!

What I believe you should do for a 12 year old is just as my Grandmother did for me. Structure. Get down on the child level. Do they understand what your trying to teach them? Probably not... so SHOW them.

Set a time everyday that is "work time" reward them when they do things on time and show them how difficult it is for those who wait until the last minute.

It worked for me...and I plan on doing the same with my girls (aged 4 and 1). Last tip - try to make time management fun...Kids love fun, and you know they are only children once.
