(See footer for photo credit links) What can you do to improve your time management - today? Really what we are all after is life balance - these time management activities will get you closer to that. But there is no point in just passively reading these activities. Action is what will get you closer to achieving effective time management in your life. So bear in mind Nikes slogan, and - Just do it!! 1. Start Your Day EarlyTime spent on a project in the morning is much more productive than time spent in the evening. When you first wake up in the morning, you are well-rested, more alert and have more energy. I used to be a complete night owl, until I set myself the challenge of getting up earlier. I found by rising at 5-am I could achieve more by 10-am than I previously had managed all day. You don't have to get up this early to benefit - try getting up just half-an-hour earlier than normal and experience the rewards! 2. Plan for the Next DaySpend 10 - 15 minutes at the end of each day planning for the next day. Do this when you are preparing to wind down from work. Consider all to-do items both work related and personal, adjust your schedule according to your obligations. 3. Take Care of Your Well-BeingLooking after your health has many benefits, including better use of your time. How so? By eating healthy and exercising regularly - you will be less susceptible to illnesses that can take you out of action. 4. Set Aside DowntimeIf you are busy trying to fill every available minute with productive activities - it is only a matter of time before you burn out. Make sure you do something everyday where you allow your mind to switch off and get the much need relaxation it needs. 5. Menu Plan for the WeekThis time management activity will save you money - as well as time. Consider what items you have in the pantry, fridge and freezer already, as well as the grocery store specials and plan the weeks meals. Remember to take any special occasions into consideration as well. 6. Delegate/Outsource Almost EverythingWrite down the things that are important to you, and delegate the rest. It really is that simple. (10 Things You Can Outsource in Your Personal Life and How to Do It) 7. Say No More Often...And show that you value your time. A busy person is often quite skilled at time management, which means others often ask them for help. Often a busy person gets a lot done, but the quality can suffer. Make sure you protect the things you enjoy and value from being enveloped by other commitments. 8. Follow a Time Management System - AlwaysThere is no such thing as a "one size fits all" time management system. Each and every one of us has a unique set of circumstances. If you don't have a time management system in place yet - start learning! I am a fan of time blocking, and using my timer to manage my time. I have seen in succeed with others again and again. (Guide to Timer and Time Blocking) 9. Simplify Your LifeA lot of the stuff that takes up room, also takes up time. Lets not get a little crazy here, there is nothing wrong with possessing things that result in happiness. Decide if you could reduce some of your material items to live a little more simply, and have a little more time. Less material possessions = less time looking after them. 10. Each Day is a New DayThe past is history. The future is a mystery. Today is a gift; and that is why they call it the present. This little saying has been around for a while, most recently I heard it on Kung fu Panda. Let all past embarrassments, failures, issues go. Each day is a fresh start, use that time wisely to create the best return on your time investment as possible.
